Meet Kevin, Our Cuban Rescue Dog

We are Bianca and Michala, and we recently had the incredible fortune of adopting Kevin, a loving and silly stray dog we met while visiting Cuba in February. Our bond with him was immediate and profound, and we knew we had to bring him back to Toronto to give him the forever home he deserves.

His Journey to Toronto

After months of eagerly waiting, Michala returned to Cuba to bring him back to Toronto. His transition to his new home has been wonderful, filled with joy and love. However, during his first vet appointment, we received heartbreaking news: he is suffering from multiple health issues, including hookworm, heartworm, and two tick infections - Ehrlichia and Anaplasma.

The Challenge

While most of these conditions can be treated with antibiotics, his heartworm infection requires monitored and costly treatment from a specialist vet. Although we knew adopting a stray would incur costs, we didn't expect them to be as expensive as this. The treatment process is lengthy and can take multiple months. We have been quoted $4000+ for his treatment, depending on the quantity of worms present. This includes specialist appointments, three rounds of heartworm medication injections, necessary tests like x-rays and echocardiograms, additional medications, potential hospital stays, and sedation, as the injections are quite painful. The expense of this treatment is beyond our means, and we are reaching out to our community for support.

Without it, his health will continue to deteriorate, and we can't bear the thought of losing our beloved companion after just finding him. He has just completed the first step in his treatment; the next step will be to visit the specialist in two weeks.
