If you're reading this, you likely know Funky Janes Consignment is a second-hand small business that has called West Seattle home for almost 30 years. It's a staple in the community, a place where neighbors can see familiar faces, find new treasures and hangout like we’re spending time with old friends. Everyone who walks through the door is considered an old friend, even if yesterday was your first visit. FJ Consignment is a safe space that prides itself in welcoming everyone regardless of background, body type, style or identity. Since its inception, FJ Consignment is woman-owned & operated. The current & former owner are both women of color, part of the dynamic cast of shop owners here in the Junction.
You likely know Panida (owner since 2019), Holly (proud Jane since 2009), or the other folks on this incredible team. And like them, you’ve likely undergone some personal sacrifices since the pandemic began. Like many small businesses, FJ Consignment has been struggling to stay afloat since reopening their doors in June 2020. The owner, Panida Vilaythong, has eagerly complied with mandated COVID precautions in order to keep her employees and shoppers safe. even to the detriment of sales. She has also been committed to making sure the employees are taken care of, because they're family. It would have been devastating for any member of this vibrant family to be laid off and left unemployed. In order to do this, Panida had to make some executive decisions. She has refused to take any salary, instead distributing any profit amongst employees. She and the team have turned to Poshmark to increase sales. She took out a business loan and cashed out her 401K retirement savings to ensure she stayed current on taxes & rent. Having exhausted all options, GoFundMe is the last step to try to save the business.
If you can do so with joy, ease and meaning, we ask you to please contribute. Whether that is with funds through this platform, stopping in to make a purchase or simply sharing this page with folks who care to see this small business thrive.
We are asking for funds that can help keep the store afloat and pay employee's wages while the pandemic's effects are at play. And if we dare to dream, we wish to help Jane with some necessary updates, including fitting room revamps and storefront makeover. Three beloved locals rely on this store for their income. Thousands of consignors choose this place, time and again, to trust with re-homing their once-loved pieces. This place is a hub for so many neighborhoodies, over so many years. Its existence is impactful beyond its place in the local economy. It is place of community. What we’re here to do above all is to ensure its survival for another 30 beautiful years. Thank you for participating and sharing in this venture.
