Hi, my name is Brittany, and I’m reaching out for help on behalf of a very special member of our family—our sweet rescue pup, Darla.
We adopted Darla from a local rescue in December 2024. We knew she had heartworms, but we didn’t realize how severe her condition was until our family vet ran further tests. The rescue had started her on a “slow kill” treatment, but it turned out the damage was far too advanced. Our vet told us she needed the much more aggressive (and expensive) “fast kill” treatment in order to survive.
We were also told Darla had been spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated—but unfortunately, that wasn’t true. She hadn’t been microchipped, and the rescue didn’t know the shelter they pulled her from never spayed her. While they offered to take care of it, our vet advised against surgery due to the risks related to her heartworm condition. We were told she couldn’t safely be spayed until six months after her last heartworm treatment injection—this coming September.
Then, the unthinkable happened.
Just today, Darla suddenly began bleeding heavily. She soaked through three diapers in just two hours. I rushed her to the emergency vet, where she was taken into surgery for a severe uterine infection (pyometra) and bladder stones. The vet said her uterus was dangerously enlarged and could have ruptured at any moment—putting her life at serious risk.
This has been a heartbreaking and unexpected emergency. The cost of her emergency care and surgery is overwhelming, and sadly, all of this could have been avoided had she received the proper medical care earlier on.
Despite everything, we are doing everything in our power to save her. Darla is such a sweet, loving soul and deserves a second chance at a healthy life.
If you’re able to donate—no matter how small—your support would mean the world to us and help give Darla the care she so desperately needs.
Thank you for reading Darla’s story and for your kindness.
With gratitude,
Brittany & Family ❤️
