Calvin is our dog, and right now our hearts feel split between hope and fear. For 9½ years, his gentle spirit and steady presence have been woven into our everyday life. Our home feels painfully quiet without him, and we miss his presence more than words can express as he fights through a sudden and serious medical emergency.
Earlier this week, Calvin swallowed an object. He began vomiting for a couple of days and was unable to keep food down, so we took him to the vet on Wednesday afternoon. X-rays revealed an object lodged in his esophagus, along with a mass on his liver.
On Thursday, the veterinary team was able to remove the object. Unfortunately, it punctured part of Calvin’s esophagus, which caused fluid to build up in and around his lungs. Our most immediate and critical concern is Calvin’s breathing. He has been struggling to breathe and has required constant care in an induced oxygen kennel, receiving 60% oxygen—the maximum level available at the clinic.
Because of the strain on his breathing, Calvin has not been able to truly rest. With extreme caution, the vet administered a small dose of a sedative to help him sleep. It was a delicate moment that could have gone wrong quickly, but thankfully it helped him rest and eased some of his distress.
Once Calvin’s breathing stabilizes and the fluid around his lungs improves, our next major concern will be the mass on his liver, which will require further testing and treatment to understand what we are facing.
Calvin remains under intensive veterinary care, and the costs for emergency imaging, procedures, oxygen therapy, medications, monitoring, and upcoming diagnostics are significant and ongoing. Every donation will go directly toward Calvin’s medical care and giving him the best possible chance to heal and come home.
