Help us Save Callie from Cancer!

Hi everyone!!

 My name is McKenna. My roommate, Gianna, and I started fostering Callie from the Columbia Animal Shelter in the beginning of January. When we took Callie home, we didn’t know much about her as she was found as a stray. We quickly realized that Callie had a history of abuse and neglect as she was scared of pretty much everything. Since living with us, Callie quickly learned what a bed is, how to play with toys, interact with people and dogs, and what it is like to be a happy dog. This sweet girl stole our hearts as her personality began to show. 

 On Tuesday, February 21st, I took Callie to the shelter so they could exam a lump we had found on her leg. That lump was then diagnosed as a cancerous mast cell tumor. The shelter let us know that their only option was euthanasia. This news was absolutely heartbreaking as Gianna and I could not imagine having to let Callie go before she really got to see the beauty of life. Fortunately, my family decided to adopt Callie, as we did not want to put her down prematurely and wanted to let her continue to be the happy dog she is until we felt it would be time to let her go. So on Wednesday, February 22nd, we officially gave Callie her forever home. 

 After sharing this story with our vet and some close friends, we found out that Callie’s tumor could actually be removed. While this news is super exciting, it is very unexpected and comes at a big cost. Callie will need a total tumor removal surgery, a variety of different medications and a many follow up vet visits. Because Gianna and I are currently in college, we need to help to save our sweet girls life. We want nothing more than to show Callie just how wonderful this life can be.
