Baby Zahir Williams is a four (4) month old male infant who is currently an inpatient on the Pediatric Ward of the University of the West Indies (UWI). He has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) from birth to present he has had multiple admissions requiring prolonged inpatient stay and he has spent most of his life admitted to the hospital. Zahir’s CKD is secondary to Vesicureteric Reflux (VUR) and Severe Hydronephrosis, this led to him having urinary obstruction from birth and ongoing damages to his kidneys. During this admission ( May 1st 2023 to present) he has had a very rapid decline in his renal function (Creatine baseline - 170s to now 524mg/dl) and has developed multiple complications associated with renal failure- Anemia ( requiring numerous blood transfusions), Fluid Overload and Electrolyte Abnormalities. He now needs Dialysis. In Jamaica we don’t have for dialysis for a child so young, hence the reason to go to the United States. Twin B died on January 15, 2023.
