Just a little over a week and a half ago we came home from what was a very normal day and running errands to our home completely engulfed in flames. On the drive home I received a call from a friend and neighbor who informed me the house was on fire and in that moment my heart sunk. Driving down the road and watching the black cloud of smoke getting bigger and bigger was one of the most helpless feelings in the world. Upon arriving to the scene we were unable to actually get close and had to wait over 2 hours before we could even get close enough to really see the damage.
As we got into the driveway it all came into view of how much total destruction was done.
The house in its entirety was gone. Everything that has been hard earned for over the last 5 years while there and 15+ years of life. Everything from furniture and photos, to clothes and bathroom supplies, books and projects, all the way to tools and savings.
For those who have followed along the last year or so know that I was racing at tracks throughout CA, and well, the weekend before I was at Sonoma Raceway and had unloaded all my track tools, wheels/tires, helmet, new parts, street parts and more into the garage to clean and move out. Now what is left is broken wheels and tire cords.
These past days have been emotionally exhausting and challenging as we learn every day of what is missing in our lives. From the small things like Q-Tips and body wash to having to buy new clothes to make it just a few days down the road. You never expect to leave your house with the clothes on your back and that’s all that you will have in that moment.
The support from friends, family, and neighbors has been wonderful. Now we are starting to face the new daily challenge of having to rebuild our lives from the literal ground up.
In every other instance in life I would never ask for help (and those who know me know it is one of my faults) but in this case, it is needed to make it to the next day(s).
