HELP US RESTORE VANDALISED WINDRUSH UNTOLD STORIES PORTRAITS
Defaced But Not Defeated
In the early hours of 3rd July, a devastating act of vandalism struck at the heart of our community. The Windrush Untold Stories exhibition, proudly displayed in Windrush Square, Brixton, was defaced—twenty portraits slashed and doused in green paint. While some reports have speculated that the perpetrator may be someone experiencing mental health issues, the impact of this act remains deeply distressing for our storytellers, organisers, and the wider community.
This exhibition is more than just images. It’s a proud and public celebration of the Windrush generation and their descendants—a space for collective memory, recognition, and resilience. Born out of the Big Caribbean Lunch, Windrush Untold Stories honours real people and real lives through photography and storytelling. Each individual featured shared their personal history with courage and grace, contributing to a powerful visual archive that reflects our community’s past and present.
Why We’re Crowdfunding
This act of vandalism is painful—but it will not silence us. We are raising £15,000 to:
• Reprint the damaged portraits with the help of Photofusion
• Reinstall the full exhibition in Windrush Square, Brixton
• Research protective measures to help safeguard the work going forward
This is about more than restoring artwork—it’s about restoring dignity and continuing to honour the people behind these stories.
How You Can Help
If you are able to donate, we would be incredibly grateful. If you can’t donate, please share this page with your networks. You can also access an online version of the exhibition here, where you can listen audio of the individuals telling their stories. Every bit of support helps us bring Windrush Untold Stories back to the community where it belongs.
Thank you for standing with us. Let’s show that our stories cannot be erased.
