Subject: International Collaboration to Restore Balance on the Alexander Technique Wikipedia Page

Dear International AT Community,

We invite you to participate in an urgent international initiative to improve public understanding of the Alexander Technique (AT) by supporting a coordinated effort to revise the English-language Wikipedia page. This is a fundraising request on behalf of Alexander Technique Canada (ATC) and the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT), in collaboration with the STAT Research Group (SRG).

Wikipedia is one of the ten most visited websites globally and serves as a key public resource for those interested in learning about the Alexander Technique. Unfortunately, the current AT page has become significantly biased due to the long-standing control of a small group of fringe editors who share a persistently negative perspective. These editors frequently misrepresent AT, resist the inclusion of peer-reviewed evidence, and apply semi-protection locks that prevent any constructive edits by new contributors. The result is a page that lacks balance and presents an inaccurate, misleading, and negative view of the Technique.

The biased Wikipedia page results in reader skepticism of the efficacy and legitimacy of the AT profession. The damage to public perception has real-world consequences. Some professional organizations, such as TED Talks, have even retracted their support for AT, adding warning disclaimers to their previous broadcasts about AT. Potential students, collaborators, and funders may be discouraged from engaging with the Technique based on the information they find on Wikipedia.

Many AT teachers, including researchers and members of the STAT Research Group, have made independent attempts to improve the page. However, without deep familiarity of Wikipedia’s editing policies, rules, and arbitration processes, these efforts have repeatedly been reversed or blocked. After more than a year of attempts, we now believe it is essential to bring together the international resources of AT organizations and seek professional guidance to address this challenge collectively.

To that end, ATC, AmSAT, and the SRG have joined forces to initiate a three phase plan.

Phase I: Find Professional Help

After conducting extensive research into professional Wikipedia editing firms, the firm WhiteHatWiki has been selected for their strong track record in managing complex and contested pages. Their team includes individuals with backgrounds in law, journalism, and advanced Wikipedia governance. Importantly, they operate transparently and ethically, fully adhering to Wikipedia’s editing policies and procedures. They also have access to formal dispute resolution and arbitration processes not available to regular users. This distinguishes them from many lesser firms that rely on short-term fixes or unethical “black hat” practices—such as making false promises, failing to disclose conflicts of interest, underpaying offshore editors, or using shell companies to attract clients. WhiteHatWiki’s approach prioritizes credibility, sustainability, and compliance.

Phase II: Seek Financial Support

Our goal is to raise $16,500 CAD ($12,000 USD) to fund an initial three-month engagement with WhiteHatWiki followed by secondary edit engagements in the months following. This will support:

  • Making balanced, evidence-based revisions
  • Submitting formal edit requests
  • Challenging disputed, outdated content
  • Challenging incorrect sources
  • Adhering to Wikipedia editing policies
  • Building a strong bank of reference resources
  • Monitoring the page for reversions or emerging bias
  • Training a small committee of volunteers to make simple changes independently

Michael Mah (ATC Council) and Mark Vasak (SRG Representative) will coordinate the work directly with WhiteHatWiki, in collaboration with AmSAT.

ATC and AmSAT have already made donations to this Wikipedia project.

Phase III: Establish Long-Term Protection

To sustain these improvements, we propose forming a Wikipedia Committee composed of representatives from AT organizations and the SRG. This group will be trained to monitor and update the page over time, helping to protect the investment from ongoing smear campaigns and ensure the profession is represented with integrity.

With your support, we believe we can restore balance to this vital public resource and strengthen the international standing of the Alexander Technique.

If you are interested in supporting this initiative or have any questions, please contact Michael Mah. We appreciate your consideration of this important international collaborative effort.

Best wishes,

Michael Mah, ATC
