Hi!
In September 2022, Chris and I traveled to Italy for a vacation and found 3 kittens on the side of the road. While we were there, we noticed a dog in a cage. We informed a local rescue organization and were hoping that they would be able to help. Exactly one year later, September 2023, we returned back to the same place and saw the same dog in the same cage - we knew we had to do something. We compared photos from last year to this year and he had lost a significant amount of weight. Since his cage was on a piece of land with no house on it, we asked around if he belonged to anyone. No one seemed to know who his owner was. We went back several days in a row to feed him and give him water as he didn't have any food or water in his cage and it was almost 40 degrees in Italy.
We had no intention of rescuing a dog on this trip as we had just lost our dog Simba of 14 years two weeks prior but we knew that we couldn't leave again knowing he was stuck in this cage. We managed to get him out and brought him straight to the vet. He was visibly shaken and his white fur had turned yellow from sitting in his own pee and feces. His hair had become dreads. We ran blood tests to make sure everything was okay and also checked for a microchip which he didn't have. After the vet, we brought him to the groomers to give him what was probably his first bath. Then we brought him back to our Air BnB and that night we all slept in peace knowing he was safe. We named him Ringo.
The days following we looked into how we could bring him back to Canada with us and started to gather all the necessary information. We went back to the vet to get his vaccines and all his paperwork for travel. We scoured the town for an acceptable crate to fly (not an easy feat when you're in a small town) and we traveled around Italy by car to show him as many places as possible. On September 27th, we all landed in Canada with the newest member of our family Ringo - you can view our full story here: https://www.tiktok.com/@iamchrisjames/video/7284636885824179462
At first we started this fund before we had brought Ringo home but now that he's home we will be raising funds to help the other animals in Santa Caterina, Calabria. We will keep you posted on the progress so follow us on social!
Thank you for following our journey!
