Our shelter’s old centrifuge is on its last spin! This vital piece of lab equipment helps us run blood and urine tests that guide life-saving treatment for our cats. We’re raising $1,923.57 to purchase a new veterinary-grade centrifuge so we can keep providing fast, affordable, in-house diagnostics — and better care for every cat.
Launched on Halloween, because what better day to talk about blood, the need is real, and it lasts all year.
________
Our case is simple: the centrifuge we’ve been borrowing from Harrison Veterinary Services is on the verge of self-destruction. It’s more than 20 years old, can’t maintain a steady speed, and no longer allows for the variable settings needed for different samples.
For example, urine must be spun at a higher speed than blood — but right now, we can’t control that. The inconsistent speeds damage samples (a process called hemolysis), leading to inaccurate test results and delayed care.
We urgently need a veterinary-appropriate centrifuge that:
- Offers variable speeds for different sample types
- Accommodates hematocrit tubes
- Fits multiple tube sizes for flexibility
Having this equipment in-house will make a huge difference to both cat welfare and veterinary costs.
Currently, every time a cat needs diagnostic testing, a volunteer has to drive them to a vet clinic in Chilliwack — adding stress for the cat, time for the volunteer, and extra expense for the shelter.
With a reliable centrifuge on-site, our volunteer veterinarian and staff can run many tests right here at the Safe Haven, including:
- FeLV/FIV
- Parvo/panleukopenia
- Giardia
- Fecal flotation
- Dermatophyte testing
- Rivalta testing for FIP…and more.
We’ll also be able to collect and submit samples directly to outside labs without needing a clinic visit. That means:
- Faster results and treatment
- Less stress for the cats
- Lower costs for the shelter
- Better outcomes and shorter stays
Total cost: $1,923.57 (including taxes and shipping)
Supplier: McCarthy Veterinary Supplies (E8 Veterinary Centrifuge)

Your donation — no matter the size — helps us keep our care standards high and our cats healthy.
Together, we can make sure our lab stays spinning safely for years to come.
________
Who are we?
Founded in 2003 by a group of like-minded individuals who wanted to make a difference in their community, Chilliwack Safe Haven began with 33 acres and a vision of helping cats, dogs, and other animals. When the founding members saw that cats were in the greatest need, the shelter shifted its focus entirely to them, selling part of the original land to dedicate its resources to feline care and sheltering.
Now we’re more than just a shelter. We’re a community resource, an advocate for responsible pet ownership, and a safe haven for cats who need time, care, and compassion before finding their “forever”.
Our Vision
A community in which every cat is safe, healthy, and loved.
Our Mission
- To provide a safe haven for cats in need through rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming.
- To share knowledge and resources with the community, (promoting spaying, neutering, and permanent ID) so more cats can remain in the homes that love them.
- To foster compassion and respect for cats and the people who care for them.
