The Leicester City, County & Rutland At Risk War Memorials Project

is a small, voluntary group dedicated to the preservation of war memorials endangered by the closure or change of use of the buildings in which they were originally positioned. We preserve the memorials out of respect for those named on them, who gave their lives in defence of their country. They are an important part of our heritage. Since 2012 we have taken into care 54 war memorials and have funded or advised on the preservation of many more. They are displayed at our base the Chancel of All Saints Church, Highcross Street, Leicester LE1 4PH, where regular Open Days are held.

We are a not-for-profit Company Limited by Guarantee with Charitable Objectives and operate entirely from donations and our modest fees for talks.

There is a need to reinvigorate and rearrange our display of the memorials. Having grown piecemeal, as we react to needs as they arise, our collection’s display and interpretation is diverse in appearance and presentation, detracting from its visual impact and informativeness. To achieve a uniform appearance and instantly improve the impact of the memorials we need to reconstruct the sturdy but very basic frames. To accomplish this improved, clean look, the present frames will be dismantled and faced with a sheet of painted MDF board upon which the memorials will be remounted. All story boards will be renewed to a standard size.
