How much can a person endure and still persist in moving forward? How much of your dreams, family, friends, money, and the things you hold dear can you lose and still maintain hope for tomorrow? What does it take to truly begin living a normal, beautiful life?
Hello, I'm Omar, a 26-year-old who's tirelessly pursued his dreams. Yet, every time success is within reach, setbacks force me to restart. Exhausted and in need, this time, I'm reaching out for your support.
The 7th of October, 2023, marked the day our lives changed irrevocably. It wasn't our first encounter with war, military operations, or the sound of bombings—we had experienced those instances more times than I can recall. However, this time was different; this time was the most challenging.
We were compelled to leave our home on the 3rd day of the war, October 9, 2023, following a notice to evacuate the neighborhood. We sought refuge at a friend's house, running through the streets with tears and labored breath, enduring a harrowing night filled with strikes that made the earth tremble. We clung to the hope of returning home for four days until October 13, 2023—the true Black Friday—the day we were instructed to evacuate the entire city of Gaza and the North. All of us were required to head south, and what was once a hope of returning to our homes transformed into a hope of returning to our city.
Moving to Al-Maghazy Camp, we stayed with another friend, expecting a brief displacement. However, as days turned into weeks, we had to relocate once again. The third move brought us to Nusirat Camp in early November 2023, where we stayed with family and friends. The reality became clearer: there was no imminent return, and life became even more challenging. No electricity, no water, no internet or cellphone network, and a scarcity of food and drinking water—every person had to fend for themselves.
In our crowded home with more than 40 people, we've had to adjust to what used to be everyday necessities becoming challenging to obtain. Securing electricity, water, food, and fire for cooking is now a daily struggle. Prices in the market have tripled, and we navigate through fire and airstrikes just to get there. Our current existence revolves around the struggle to obtain basic necessities. With no electricity, we rely on an external power generator, consuming a significant amount of costly petrol/gasoline—$30 for a liter. Obtaining gas for cooking requires an additional expense of over $40 for a 12kg canister. If wood is needed for cooking, it costs around $10 a day. Basic food items are acquired at triple the market price, limited to canned goods, while essential medicines are unavailable. We've spent everything we had to survive thus far, but will it be enough until the war ends? Unfortunately, I don't think so.
Presently, we face two stark options: stay and risk death or leave and potentially survive. However, leaving poses its own challenges. The city lies in ruins with no schools, hospitals, or infrastructure. To forge a new life, we desperately need assistance. The fees to leave Gaza for Egypt amount to $5000 per person, and substantial funds are required for recovery in Egypt and once the war is over for maintinance of the house & surviving until we figure out what to do and how things will turn out in and after the war..
Here are some pictures we got for our area of living in Gaza City
