Help Us Recover From Toxic Mold & Find a New Home

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Nicole.

While I am not one to turn to others for help, my family and I have found ourselves in a particularly awful situation.

On December 29th 2023, one day after my birthday we moved into what was supposed to be our "new start" home. Within 2 weeks of living in the new home we rented, my fiancé began to develop migraines and painful rashes and swelling all over his body. He experienced brain fog, hair loss and severe pain from the rashes for a month before my children and I began feeling sick as well.

Towards the end of February I began having trouble breathing, I developed rashes burning rashes on my face and body. I had a very strong feeling we were all sick because of the house, I believed there was a mold problem but I wasn't 100% sure. We contacted the landlord and let them know what was happening. I asked them to hire a mold inspector and they did not respond with any urgency so I hired an inspector to do the mold test myself.

We left the house that day and went to stay with my father. I asked the landlord to provide safe housing for us and they declined. Within days the mold test came back positive for toxic levels of Aspergillus one of the most toxic types of mold. I asked again for safe housing from the landlord and they said no once again even with the proof of toxic mold.

I learned that everything in the house will need to be thrown out because the toxic mold spores stick to most surfaces and to avoid further illness and the spreading of toxic mold into our new home, we will have to get rid of everything and start over. I am absolutely heart broken, we have lost everything. I know material things can be replaced but what's the most painful is that my family is sick and we aren't receiving any sort of support from the landlord in this situation despite continuously asking them for help.

After three weeks of staying with family, they asked us to leave and we have been staying in a motel. We are all trying to detox from toxic mold and are still very sick because it takes up to 18 months to fully remove mold from the body. At the same time, I am trying to work and also find safe housing for my family.

I am doing my best to stay positive and be a rock for my family but I am utterly maxed out and emotionally drained, and feel as though every free moment I have is spent glued to my devices in search of any help or opportunities to find a new home.

Like I said at the beginning of this message, I’m not one to ask for help. But in the current situation, I’m at a loss. Any support would be greatly appreciated to help me and my family heal and get into a safe home.

Thank you for reading my story.

Sincerely, Nicole
