Toen de Cello Biënnale ons uitnodigde om een cello octet versie te maken van het Beatles album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, hebben we dat idee meteen enthousiast omarmd.

 

Sgt. Pepper’s was namelijk het meest revolutionaire album van The Beatles. Op dit album werden in 1967 alle pop- en rockwetten verbroken. Het waren geen losse nummers meer maar een totaalconcept, een album waarop ze bovendien in de studio ongekende experimenten loslieten, omdat ze wisten dat ze het toch nooit live gingen uitvoeren.

Het leek ons heel spannend om juist het album dat The Beatles zelf nooit live hadden gespeeld, als cello octet uit te gaan voeren. Maar hoe ga je Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds of A Day in the Life laten klinken op acht cello’s? Een enorme technische en artistieke uitdaging die alleen een zeer ervaren vakman en grote creatieve geest die ook nog alles weet van pop en rock kan aangaan. Eigenlijk was er maar een persoon om dit aan toe te vertrouwen: de Nederlands-Amerikaanse componist, gitarist en popzanger David Dramm.

 

David Dramm maakte inderdaad een weergaloos arrangement van het volledige album. Na de première tijdens de Cello Biënnale in 2020 gaf Frits van der Waa vijf sterren in de Volkskrant:

 

"Maar het is natuurlijk de – compleet uit het hoofd gespeelde – muziek die maakt dat we dit gerust het concert van het jaar kunnen noemen." ☆☆☆☆☆

 

Het kon natuurlijk niet bij dat ene concert blijven. Daarom wilden we deze muziek nu graag opnemen. En daar hebben we jullie hulp bij nodig! Met deze crowdfunding zullen we een deel van de kostenposten dekken als studiohuur, opname technicus, editing & mastering, en niet te vergeten de auteursrechten. Het was lange tijd zelfs spannend of er wel toestemming zou komen van de rechthebbenden voor het opnemen van deze versie, maar gelukkig kregen we groen licht!

Het Octet is altijd al een vurig pleitbezorger geweest van de klankmogelijkheden van de cello. Dat leidde in dit project naar wel heel bijzondere uithoeken, het werd een zoektocht waarin cello’s gingen klinken als gitaren, zang, tabla, tanpura, sitar, blazers, ritmesectie, harp en dierengeluiden. De cello, hoewel nog steeds dat warm-menselijke strijkinstrument, ging klinken als nooit tevoren. Maar ook de iconische Beatles songs, nog altijd revolutionair èn aanstekelijk, klinken als nooit tevoren!

 

Daarnaast doet Sgt. Pepper’s iets bijzonders met onze groep. We zijn al jaren een hecht kamermuziekensemble, maar door als cello-rockband de studio in te gaan krijgt ons samenspel een nieuwe dimensie – samenspelen in steeds wisselende rollen van gitarist, leadzanger, drummer of bassist is een heel ander verhaal dan samensmelten in een homogene celloklank. Door een plaat op te nemen duiken we extra diep in die rollen, en wat is een betere manier om warm te draaien voor de Sgt. Pepper’s live tour die eraan komt in 2023?!

When the Cello Biennale invited us to make a cello octet version of the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, we immediately embraced the idea.

Sgt. Pepper's was the Beatles' most revolutionary album and broke all pop and rock conventions. With this album, The Beatles no longer treated each of the songs individually but rather as parts of a total concept album that unleashed unprecedented studio and recording techniques and would go on to influence and inspire artists for generations. 

Given The Beatles never intended the album to be performed live, we thought it would be exciting to transfer this groundbreaking album, including all experimental audio effects, to a live concert setting. But how would we perform Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds or A Day in the Life for eight cellos? This would be an enormous technical and artistic challenge. There was only one person we could entrust this to: the Dutch-American composer, guitarist and pop singer David Dramm.

After the premiere performance during the Amsterdam Cello Biennale 2020, Frits van der Waa gave five stars in the Volkskrant:

"But of course it is the music – played completely from memory – that makes this the concert of the year." ☆☆☆☆☆

But of course it can't stop at the live concert experience which is why we wanted to record this music now. And we need your help to do that! With the funds raised from this crowdfunding campaign, we'll be able to cover recording costs including: studio rent, recording technicians, editing & mastering, and last but not least copyright (for a long time it was uncertain whether there would be permission from the rights holders to record this version...but luckily we got the green light!)

The Octet have always been keen advocates for exploring the sound possibilities of the cello and this project has pushed us to explore how best to make the cello sound like guitars, vocals, tabla, tanpura, sitar, horns, a rhythm section, harps and animals. In this project the cello, while still that warmly human string instrument, has developed a new sound palette while the iconic Beatles songs, still revolutionary and catchy, have also taken on a new character!

In addition, performing this project has given us a new perspective on our ensemble. Although we have been a close chamber music ensemble for many years, working together as a cello-rock band has given our playing a new dimension – playing together in ever-changing roles of guitarist, lead singer, drummer or bassist is a completely different approach than our usual goal of merging into a homogeneous cello sound. By recording this project, we'll dive deeper into these rolls and get ourselves in perfect shape for our upcoming 2023 tour!
