Hello, my family and I had moved here about 9 months ago to a small little town in Burns Oregon in Harney County Oregon, in summer or spring of Jun 2024. My family and I did so much for this home- you wouldn’t even know. We invested a lot of money fixing up this home and renovating it, including painting, removing the carpets from it, uprooting and dry-walling. Along with the time spent doing all that.
So moving on, around the time this flood began- it started in March 1, 2025.
We started seeing water peaking along the house and our park, and so we began gathering sand bags for around our house-hurting our backs and carrying so many of those- it just filled up our premises. Previously we had spoke and warned
the people working for the town and the people in it to seal up the ditch and canal from the river so that the river and sewer system could regulate the flow of the Silvies river smoothly and properly. However, no one listened or took us seriously. The canal and levy broke and flooded up the town.
Now, unfortunately we are currently in a homeless shelter called the “Red Cross” and sleep in cots and we lost everything in our home and our house and cars are completely under water.
We had to evacuate because of how serious the water was rising and
since the town only warned the people at the very last moment- this didn’t leave us enough time to take all of our stuff out of the home.
So we only brought a few bags of our belongings.
Our situation is now like a third-world country.
We are in a dire emergency critical situation and we are in constant panic and worry about what to do in our situation and where we need to stay or where we will go next. And we need money for a new home and re-building our area.
in about March 28/29 The sheriff only gave us a 1.5 hr warning of a level-3 flood.
This evacuation happened at noon. The infrastructure in Burns was not prepared or appropriate for a disastrous flooding situation.
Most of the people we had contact with in this town had mentioned they have never witnessed a flood or anything like this in 18-30 years of living there- and one of the news sources mention there was not a flood like this in over 75 years.
And so, we have contacted the mayor, the cops, some towns people, and they didn't take us seriously, a couple guys who were by the sandbag station just looked at their watches and said" Oh look at the time, I gotta go." and ignored our plea to help us. They did help a tiny bit- but we had to force them. And we also got one big family on a tractor to help a little. The rest we did all by ourselves. Later, we contacted the news, the fire-department,
Harney county, then contacted the city and our insurance company, and they denied our claim and told us, " That's what you get for moving to a small town. " Adding that we should visit the church and get to know all the community and people from around here.
But that isn’t appropriate to us- considering we barely moved here and got acquainted with this system. That’s not very welcoming of them to tell new residents this. So pretty much- they drag their feet and don’t do anything about serious situations, don’t improve, and their system is poor. Claiming that fixing their canal would cost lots of money, yet no one wants to do anything about this. Yet we all found out they were only helping the people whose home wasn’t as badly affected as ours and to the employees of the Red Cross organization.
And we had recently found out that the Red Cross had secretly been giving the other people whose homes weren’t as badly affected-a place to stay free at (America’s Best inn) hotel, Rory & Ryan’s and elsewhere. And I spoke to the people who worked for the Red Cross if the workers get to stay at hotels. And they admitted it was true.
Also, mostly our home plus (2) others had the worst flood in this town. There are news sources and witnesses covering this evidence in my article. And all links/pictures/videos are all at the bottom of this page.
And before the flooding happened on a severe level- they didn't take us or this situation seriously and didn't act with urgency and our case was in fact severe and only got worse.
And so then, around March 29- when the flood got to a very high water volume- the cops went inside our home to investigate the home. All the doors were shut and the air reeked of sewage and Silvies river. The refrigerator was tipped to the top of the countertops. The garage was in dis-array and dismantle. Any electronics in the lower portion of the house circuits were fried.
The water meter was pulled out, the garage door was busted open.
The walls and paint was warped.
And now, currently we have been staying at the Red Cross shelter for over 14 days - and there were only (11 people) at the shelter as of now to work with and they still haven’t prioritized our situation or got our home-assessment and property attorney running so that we can move forward. The only attorney that’s local in this town is making us wait some more- until April 29 to arrive and assess our home and situation.
we need the property attorney here sooner because of how urgent and severe our situation and house is in right now.
We need the property attorney a more quick than the time they gave us considering this is an emergency and we also need a team to clean up our home and all our stuff in it, as it had been contaminated with sewage backings and river water/E-coli along with other unknown contaminants and debris from other parts of town and possible dangers/ maybe floating nails or other items in that home along with a possible rotting of the wood and it may fall apart because of how long they’re making us wait and how long their keeping the water around our home. It’s like a danger zone. The people who work for Red Cross, in addition are also dismissing us, not understanding, and not acting urgent enough to aid our situation. All they offered was that we go in that home and clean it up with their tools, rakes and shovels and hand sanitizer. But they don’t understand. This situation is unique and our home was the attacked one of the worse as Burns Oregon town and Indian reservation canal flooding faults. So just to make everyone aware- do not donate to the “Red Cross” if you actually want to help people in a catastrophic situation. All they use for their donations is to spend at hotels and uhauls while the people who are actually affected and could use hotels and uhauls stay out in the open and sleep in cots at a shelter where people stay up all night talking with bright lights on and won’t let you sleep well. Be sure you donate to those people directly. They wanted us to go into our home -yet I still refuse to step foot in there because I don’t want to step in a zone of hazardous contaminants. And the fact I’m still waiting for my property attorney to help us with what we need- we cannot step foot in our home to clean up until all this had been settled. Also, I saw the RedCross carrying “RedCross” licensed and branded Uhauls driving around town. But the resources they really should offer are their RedCross Uhauls for those who lost their homes in a disaster for free so we can get our stuff out of the house! Just to update our situation- a lot of the homes I saw around town are starting to clear up and are getting their water pumped out by the city workers. Problem is, our house still has 3-4 ft of water still sitting in our backyard for about a month- and lots of water along our house and ditch - and no one from the city has went to pump it out or help us. Yet, they did so for the park and other residents whom were our neighbors. What’s bad about this is that we barely have any money, like not enough for basic living. It is now like we are treated as if we were homeless, thrown to the side, and
un-important while others are prioritized.
