Hello--we are United Houma Nation tradition bearers who maintain the arts of palmetto basketweaving and garfish scale jewelry-making . Each of us lost our home during Hurricane Ida, and we are now seeking support to rebuild our lives.

The Houma peoples have inhabited these lands for centuries, but we are aware that climate change threatens our traditional way of life. We are committed to perpetuating our indigenous culture by sharing the crafts, foodways, and knowledge that we inherited from our ancestors. Donations will help us rebuild our homes, and, in turn, recommit ourselves to our life's work.

With gratitude,

Janie & Ann Luster

Theriot, Louisiana

P.S. Because we have limited access to the internet in Ida's wake, we asked New Orleans-based folklorist Teresa Parker to create this campaign but rest assured only we will withdraw and use the funds!
