My name is Massiel, and I’m reaching out for help after a fire in the building next to ours turned our lives upside down. My daughter and I had to leave our apartment with nothing but the clothes on our backs and a phone with 1% battery. We didn’t even have coats, and my daughter was barefoot. Thankfully, our home didn’t catch fire, but the smoke and soot from the neighboring building made our apartment and everything in it unsafe. We tried to get help from the Red Cross, but since the fire wasn’t in our unit and there was no structural damage, we were denied assistance. Now, most of our belongings—including food, medicine, clothes, and even my daughter’s toys—have to be thrown away because of the contamination.
We’ve only lived here for less than a year, and when we moved in, we already faced challenges. Many of our large items were damaged by movers, and we used up our savings to fix what we could. We worked hard to make this place our home, replacing things little by little. Now, we’re starting over again, but this time we don’t have the basics we need. With my health conditions and a young child, it’s not safe for us to return until our home is properly cleaned and we can replace essentials like food, hygiene products, clothes, and a safe place for my daughter to sleep and play.
We are seeking support for: medication and medical needs, groceries (our food and pantry items had to be thrown away), clothing for our daughter, my partner, and myself (including winter essentials), car seat and stroller for our daughter, blankets and hygiene products, cleaning supplies and protective equipment, air purifier and home safety supplies, mattress and basic furniture, kitchen essentials (plastic and silicone items are unsafe to use), and basic items for our child such as toys, books, and learning supplies.
We are so grateful for any support you can offer. Your kindness will help us rebuild, keep our family safe, and bring us one step closer to making our home feel like home again. Thank you for being part of our journey and for helping us through this difficult time.
