Batimetry Studies to Safeguard an Iconic Wave

Zicatela is not just a wave.

It is a living ecosystem, a cultural symbol, and one of the most powerful and iconic surf breaks in the world.

For years, the natural dynamics of Zicatela were affected by a breakwater built in the main bay of Puerto Escondido. In 2024, thanks to the force of nature and the unity of the local community, the breakwater was removed. The waves began to breathe again.

This campaign represents the next critical step.

Why Batymetry Studies Matter

To protect Zicatela long-term, we need science.

Batymetry studies allow us to understand:

• The shape and movement of the seafloor

• Coastal currents and sediment transport

• How human interventions can impact wave quality and coastal balance

With this data, we can work alongside the government, scientists, and the local community to ensure that future projects, infrastructure, or coastal management plans do not harm the Zicatela wave again.

This is essential for responsible decision-making and sustainable coastal protection.

We are raising $200,000 MXN (approximately $12,000 USD) to fund professional batymetry studies in Zicatela.

Estudios de batimetría para cuidar una ola icónica

Zicatela no es solo una ola.

Es un ecosistema vivo, un símbolo cultural y una de las olas más poderosas e icónicas del mundo.

Durante años, la dinámica natural de Zicatela se vio afectada por una escollera construida en la Bahía Principal de Puerto Escondido. En 2024, gracias a la fuerza de la naturaleza y a la unión de la comunidad, esta escollera fue retirada. Las olas comenzaron a respirar de nuevo.

Esta campaña representa el siguiente paso fundamental.

¿Por qué son importantes los estudios de batimetría?

Para proteger Zicatela a largo plazo, necesitamos ciencia.

Los estudios de batimetría nos permiten conocer:

• La forma y el comportamiento del fondo marino

• Las corrientes costeras y el movimiento de sedimentos

• Cómo las intervenciones humanas pueden afectar la calidad de la ola y el equilibrio costero

Con esta información podremos trabajar de la mano con el gobierno, especialistas y la comunidad, para asegurar que cualquier proyecto futuro, obra o plan de manejo costero no vuelva a afectar la ola de Zicatela.

Estos estudios son clave para tomar decisiones responsables y sostenibles.
