Help us Protect Pangolins & Build our Base Camp
Tax deductible
Dear Pangolin Friends,
We need your help! After 2 years of living out of a car, we have been planning the launch of our field base camp for the Nyae Nyae Pangolin Project in July. Our goal is to establish a long-term resident pangolin research center accepting local and international students with a special focus on community support. This move will allow us to expand our protection of pangolins through the pangolin ranger program and tag more free-roaming pangolins to better understand their ecology. We are so thankful for the very generous support of donors who contributed towards a storage container that has been outfitted with solar power, office furniture, an attached outdoor bathroom, and water tank.
We were hoping to already be sharing the inauguration with you, but unfortunately have run into some unforeseen circumstances and had to move the site location at the last minute. And by last minute, we literally mean the very last minute. The storage container is scheduled to be delivered from Namibia’s capital (Windhoek) to our remote location in just 2 weeks, and cannot be delayed.
The original location had basic infrastructure, but the new one does not. In the next 2 weeks, we have to set the foundations, clear roads, and dig a pipeline over 1 mile / 2 km long. An enormous task.
We hate to ask for help, but we urgently need your support to accomplish this. We need to raise $10,000 USD to:
- Employ people in the local village to dig the trench for the pipeline, which has already begun, and clear the road for the delivery vehicle
- Lay a foundation for the container, cement slabs for the camp, and groundwork for the infrastructure as a whole
- Cover the cost of fuel to deliver it all from Windhoek, a 500 mile / 800 km journey and 8 hour drive
Additionally, this will provide running water to the community campsite - something that will increase the benefit to the community and tourists alike who stay there.
As a special thanks to those of you who donate $25 or more, your name will be put on the storage container. In this way, you will forever be part of this critical milestone in our history. In addition, we have outlined the following levels of support and corresponding tokens of appreciation:
- $25 USD: Round PCRF sticker and name on the storage container
- $50 USD: PCRF Bumper Sticker, Round PCRF sticker and name on the storage container
- $100 USD: PCRF sticker and hand-carved/personalised Makalani nut. Your name will also be entered into a drawing for a 3 night stay for you and a guest at the PCRF field base camp here in Namibia at the Nyae Nyae Conservancy, where you will meet the team and learn about pangolin research firsthand (September 2023-September 2024). Transportation not included.
