Donning of the Stoles and Lavender Graduation are ceremonies that honor and celebrate students of diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds and LGBTQIA+ identities at the milestone of earning their undergraduate degrees. These ceremonies are open to all and have been longstanding and important UNC Asheville traditions. Graduates, their families and friends, and our campus community come together to acknowledge graduates as they receive a ceremonial stole or cord, which is then worn with their graduation regalia at the University Commencement ceremony.
Beginning in 2025, the responsibility for organizing and funding these events now falls to student organizations. For May 2025, with a 2-week turnaround and the support of dozens and dozens of campus and community volunteers and donors of time, food, and money, multiple student organizations have been able to successfully host the May 2025 Donning of the Stoles and Lavender Graduation ceremonies on May 9. 92 graduates participated!
Event costs include stoles and cords and reception snacks (the largest expenses), modest decorations, and a photographer, and are approximately $4,000. With all food and services donated for 2025, the costs totaled $2,000.
We have raised over $5,000, netting $3,000. We are now seeking to raise another $5,000-$10,000 to create a restricted fund dedicated to supporting the costs of future Donning of the Stoles and Lavender Graduation ceremonies. With $8,000 raised, we can host these ceremonies through 2027. And with even more, we can ensure these ceremonies into the future. Please help us continue the traditions that celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating students.
This GoFundMe is created by a faculty member, with oversight by several faculty members and student organizations. 100% of funds will go toward a restricted fund for the purpose of supporting and hosting these ceremonies that honor students of diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds and LGBTQIA+ identities.
