Planting Trees & ALS Research to Honor the life of Dave Starner
At the age of 45, Dave Starner was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Over the past 11+ years he lived his life fully despite his diagnosis. He enjoyed all his music (Grateful Dead, Phish and even Johnny Cash...) and spent time with family and friends, drinking many a craft beer along the way.
On Thursday, February 18th Dave died at the age of 56.
His wife Laurie, together with his brothers Mike and Steve and Dad, Bill, want to honor Dave’s memory by planting trees. One of Dave’s passions was landscaping, which ALS took from him as his disease progressed. As often as his health would allow, Laurie and Dave would make the trek to the west coast to visit his beloved cousins and the California Redwood trees. Their final trip there together was just in November of 2020, where they again enjoyed the natural surroundings of the California coast and the awe-inspiring Redwood trees. He kept commenting on how lucky he was to have gone back before the Pandemic had gotten worse.
Trees will be planted for a memorial garden at Dave’s home, family’s yards and in a park in Reynoldsburg, where Dave was a 1983 graduate of Reynoldsburg High School (Bowling Green & Franklin University) and where he and Laurie have lived since 1993. Funds raised through this effort will also be used to make a gift in Dave’s name for ALS Research at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center ALS Clinic.
Dave loved his family and his friends. Despite the challenges presented by ALS he continued to enjoy so much of life. We can all learn by his example of remaining positive and valuing the unique qualities of each person in his life.
We are grateful so many have come forward to ask how they might help honor Dave. Please help us plant trees for Dave.
