Families for Houston/Houston HSA is raising money for the Henry H. Houston Elementary garden. We’re excited to bring new life to a long-neglected space at the school by transforming it into a vibrant, sustainable native pollinator garden.
Along the south side of the school—adjacent to the playground and staff parking lot—sits a historic stone wall that has recently (finally!) been restored. Now, we have the opportunity to turn the final stretch of public-facing perimeter garden into something truly special.
Patrick Hauck, the Houston neighbor who maintains the beautiful gardens at the school, envisages a thriving, full-sun, drought-resistant garden filled with native pollinator plants. Spanning approximately 1,600 square feet (8 feet deep by 150 feet long), this new garden will feature a rich mix of native flowers, shrubs, and woody plants designed to support bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators.
This project is already underway, supported by two grants we’ve secured this year—but we need your help to bring it fully to life. Your contribution will go directly toward plants, soil preparation, and materials needed to completely fill and sustain this space.
When complete, this garden will mark a major milestone: the entire public-facing perimeter of our school will be lined with native plantings, creating a beautiful, educational, and environmentally impactful landscape for students, families, and the community to enjoy.
Together, we can restore this historic space and cultivate something that will grow, bloom, and give back to the school and the wider community for years to come.
Every donation helps us plant the future—thank you for your support!
Edit: Thanks so much to all the volunteers who showed up this past weekend to start preparing the ground for planting! And to Bennett Compost for the generous donation of mulch.
