Help Gus Recover from Emergency Orthopaedic Surgery

In December 2025 we adopted our beautiful puppy Gus from the BARRC rescue group. His rescue name was Dime, and from the moment he came home he quickly became a much-loved part of our family.

On Thursday 26 March, Gus suddenly came inside limping after playing with his older sister Grace in the backyard. At first we thought he may have strained something, but when he refused to put weight on his leg we knew something was wrong.

After many phone calls we finally found a vet who could see him urgently and take X-rays. The imaging showed that Gus had suffered a tibial tuberosity avulsion fracture involving the growth plate in his hind leg. This is a serious injury in young puppies that requires specialist orthopaedic surgery to repair properly.

Gus was referred to the Animal Hospital at Murdoch University, where surgeons were able to successfully stabilise the fracture. We are incredibly grateful to the veterinary team for saving his leg and giving him the chance to recover fully.

Unfortunately the cost of diagnostics, surgery, hospitalisation and follow-up care has come to just over $10,000.

Gus now faces the hardest part of recovery — six weeks of strict crate confinement while the bone and growth plate heal.

We adopted Gus from rescue and are absolutely committed to giving him the care he needs, but the unexpected cost has been a significant financial shock for us.
