Help Us Overcome Unfair $7,000 Debt

Trying to raise funds to cover debt caused by old roommates. Three years back, my partner and I moved with three other people into an apartment. Over time, these people caused damage to the apartment by getting four dogs and a cat that weren't trained at all (nor was there any effort put in to do so). They weren't even allowed to have any of those animals. Two of the dogs that were kept in the house were not house-trained and would shit and piss everywhere, along with destroying our carpets because past roommates would lock said animals in their rooms.

Fast forward nine months, things escalated to a domestic abuse situation. We had to barricade ourselves in our room for 2 DAYS, with little to no food. These roommates had threatened our lives and tried to break our door down to get to us. We were forced to leave right after within a day while they were out partying. We got into contact with the leasing office and pleaded for them to let us break our lease, which they never did. Once we had left, the roommates got evicted due to not paying the rent. They had caused $4,000 in damages, which was all caused by our roommates and their dogs and cat that they shouldn't have had to begin with. They verbally agreed to pay the damages.

Fast forward to the present. We are now being told that my partner and I have to pay $7,000 to collections because the damage was never paid for. We were okay doing payments of $300 a month to pay off this debt, but haven't been able to keep up due to needing to pay rent and afford food.

As of now, collections is threatening to seize our property, belongings, and assets to satisfy said judgment. We are extremely scared of losing our home and belongings.
