When the school day ends in Puerto de La Libertad, a lot of children have nowhere safe to go. Many live with a grandparent or another relative because their parents migrated or couldn't stay. Two schools a 12-minute walk from our site have asked us for after-school care.
So we're opening a free club: a meal, play, nature and learning in Spanish, with grown-ups who stay until a carer comes to collect each child.
This first club is a beta. James's family is lending a seafront plot on Calle El Obispo free for 12 months, so there's no rent and every dollar goes into the club itself: temporary classrooms, local teachers, meals and materials. We're testing a curriculum, a daily format and a layout, and measuring the results, so we can open permanent clubs here and in other places.
We'll film every step and share what it costs and what changes for the children at awesomage.org/now.
Organised by James Layfield. Funds are paid to James and spent directly on the club; we'll publish what comes in and what goes out.
