Help us make Asian American short film "Come Eat"

Beschermde donatie
About the film:

“Come Eat” is a short film inspired by my experience as  an Asian immigrant in Canada and the United States. Following a day of the life of first generation Chinese American Jun and her Americanized daughter Emily, the film reflects both the interpersonal and internalized violence of racism and white supremacy.

Why I'm making the film:

As the atmosphere grows increasingly hostile towards immigrants, I feel a sense of urgency to tell this story and challenge some of the misconceptions that Asian immigrants are excluded from the impacts of xenophobia and racism. I hope the film will open up an honest dialogue about our experiences, and help us build solidarity with other marginalized people.

About me (Zhei  Xie):

As a second generation Chinese immigrant born in Toronto, I remember hating Chinese food when I was young. I preferred chicken wings and pasta over tangcuxiaopai (sweet and sour pork) or shizitou (stewed meat balls). This completely baffled my parents, who would make these complex, delicious Chinese meals only to realize that their child preferred frozen chicken fingers or store-bought BBQ sauce. When I saw my younger brother go through the same phase, I finally understood why I didn’t like Chinese food: I wanted to be fully Canadian, and Chinese food was not that.

Looking back, I made efforts to hide anything I could about my Chinese heritage - I never spoke Chinese outside of the house, I always said I was born in Toronto. But of course, it was impossible to disassociate with being Chinese - it was always on my face. It was all that people saw.

As I grew up, I became more proud of my Chinese heritage, and now I always choose Chinese food over burgers and pasta, but a recent experience (written into the script) resurfaced these memories and made me want to explore them as a filmmaker.

About the Team:

Producer - Dan Frank

Dan’s work as a producer, director, or writer encompasses TV series, commercials, education and non-broadcast.

His work has aired on PBS, Discovery, DIY, FOX, FX, HGTV, NBC Universal & NBC, NESN and TLC, among others. Dan directed the four-hour Cool Spaces! series that aired on PBS and was a coordinating producer on the upcoming Boston, a documentary on the Boston Marathon. And he's been a series producer on several programs.

He’s currently adjunct faculty at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

Associate Producer/Lead Actress - Grace Chang

Grace Chang is a Chinese American, actor, director, filmmaker, and writer. She was a professional magician when she got her first acting break in 1993 when she appeared in The Joy Luck Club as Lin-Xiao's Opera Singer/Mistress. Though she stepped away from acting to raise her son, she continued to perform and create on stage shows. She always remained interested in honing her acting skills and is now taking on filmmaking in addition to acting. In 2018 Grace appeared in over ten short films in lead or principal roles, and wrote and directed her own first short film, A Missing Piece.

We are happy to be part of this tradition of Asian American film history as The Joy Luck Club was the second movie to feature a majority Asian cast telling an Asian American story. Crazy Rich Asians was the third, serving as a harrowing reminder of how under-represented Asian Americans are in media. This film is part of a wave of films to change that, and we hope that you can support our movement.

Where the money's going:

We aim to provide wages, food, insurance, travel and accommodation as needed for crew members and actors to compensate for their hard work (this will cost ~$7000). We also need to rent production equipment - camera, lens, lighting and sound - so that the story is told effectively (this will cost around ~$6400 - equipment is so expensive!). Finally, we also need to rent appropriate locations to set the scene ($1700). We are hoping to raise $10, 000 via crowdfunding and will cover the rest.
