Help us lay Spike to rest

(ver mas abajo la traducción al español)

Ten years, a decade. And yet, it feels like last week when we first met. Younger, thinner, and with a slightly cocky look in your eye, you told us your name was “Spike”. We hired you to help out in the kitchen and ended up training you to carve ducks because you felt comfortable in front of customers. It was probably that cocky look in your eye that made us do it. We secretly betted how long you would last. After all, we are in the food service industry. Smart cocky guys don’t last long. They tend to find bigger and better things to do with their lives. Maybe it was your brother working with us in the kitchen. Maybe we showed you what a family could look like. Whatever, it was, it made you stay and work with us for the last ten years.

In the beginning, we started out as employer/employee. Then it became friends as you continued working with us. Friendship turned into that comfortable feeling of family at some point, we can’t remember when. It felt like sibling rivalry when we all ended up pregnant at similar times and added to our individual families. That made our extended family bigger, adding another layer to that feeling of family. We saw each other at our worst, you needing a helping hand on the floor, us screaming like madmen in the kitchen. We saw each other at our best, you showing off your knife skills carving duck and joking with customers, us keeping the chaos of the restaurant under control. A decade of that sealed in our fate as a family.

We did our best to stay safe during this pandemic. We fought with people over masks, we labored over how to move the floor around for the best layout to social distance, we built safety equipment from scratch. We thought we were nearing the end, we were seeing the light at the end of the crazy tunnel, we were going to make it out of the pandemic safely. But no, the heavens had other plans for you. You felt unwell and came back covid positive. As you stayed home to get better, we planned for your return. When you went to the hospital, the rest of us covered until you could be released and get back to work. When you didn’t come home, we put on a strong face in front of the customers and cried with each other in the kitchen. We can’t put into words how to say good bye to our friend, our brother, our family. After ten years as a family, that’s the hardest part.

Born Jose Ulises Evaristo Martinez in Mexico on June 13, 1989, you were only thirty-two years old. You leave behind your parents: Luis Evaristo Cornelio and Josefina Martinez. You leave behind your children: Leonardo, Ulises (Junior), Genesis, and Jayden. You leave behind your brother, Jose Luis Evaristo Martinez. You leave behind your friends and coworkers at the restaurant. You leave behind the thousands of fans who have watched you carve duck countless times. You have left, but you are not gone. Your spirit and your memory are still with us, your family.

We are grateful for all donations, great or small. All funds will go towards paying for Spike’s cremation expenses and sending his ashes back to his hometown in Mexico. Should there be any leftover or excess funds, savings bonds will be purchased in his children’s names for post-high school studies.

Te has ido, pero no te has ido.
