Help Us Lay Maria to Rest in Zambia

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, mother, niece, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, Maria Phiri.

Maria’s Journey

Maria was first diagnosed with Cancer in 2013. With strength, determination, and unwavering faith, she faced her diagnosis head-on. She embraced the words from Hebrews 11:1 — “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” These words guided her as she underwent treatment and lived each day with hope.

For many years, Maria thrived. She continued to laugh, to love, and to bring light into the lives of many. She was the kind of woman who could make you laugh even in the darkest moments and if she wasn’t making you laugh, it was what she had done that would make you laugh — a beacon of joy.

In mid-2021, Maria’s cancer returned. She received treatment at Queens hospital where she had a long spell and later discharged to home in December 2021. In July 2023, Maria underwent further review of treatment at Basildon hospital before being transferred to Uplands Rehabilitation Centre in Essex. Maria was at Uplands Rehabilitation Centre from October 2023 until she sadly lost the battle the second time round on 12th April 2025.

Why We Need Your Help

We are now faced with the challenging task of repatriating the body to her beloved home country, Zambia so she can be laid to rest where her family reside including her beloved mother. The cost of repatriation and funeral is close to £10,000.

Funds raised through this GoFundMe will specifically go towards; funeral service costs, coffin, body expatriation to Zambia, flight tickets for her 9-year-old twins and other burial costs. We are asking for your help to ease the financial burden on the family during this incredibly difficult time. Any contributions, no matter how small, will help us take Maria Phiri home and give her the farewell she deserves.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support during this difficult time. Please feel free to share this fundraiser to the larger community.

Thank you for your generosity, prayers, and support.
