My name is Margaret. As some of you know, I’ve been off work on FMLA for most of the fall semester of 2024. I’ve been taking care of my mom since August 2024, but officially became her caretaker in early October. This past August, I learned my mom was diagnosed with dementia. From that month on, her health continued to decline slowly through the next few months until one day in December when one morning she didn’t wake up. I’m glad I had the opportunity to spend more time with my mom. It gave us both many special days and more quality time spent together. My mom was always there for me no matter what, and always just a phone call away. Now she’s gone, and I’ll never hear her voice on the other end of the phone anymore.
What’s harder is because I took time off work on FMLA, that cut my salary in half, which made it even more difficult to keep up my half of her medical expenses besides my own basic home expenses and now, the unexpected high cost of funerals. Because my brother is in the same financial situation as I am, we can’t come up with the funds to properly lay our mom to rest and say our final goodbyes. The funeral home is kind enough to give us some time to hopefully raise funds while holding her body.
I’ve set up this GoFundMe. Something I never thought I would do, but here it goes.
This is not easy for me. I’m reaching out to my friends and co-workers and asking, if you can find it in your hearts to help donate any amount, my brother and I would appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts.
Goodbyes are not forever.
Goodbyes are not the end.
They simply mean
I'll miss you
Until we meet again.
