1. What is the name of the organization, and what is its purpose?

The organization is called Out and Active Ohio. Our goal is to create a welcoming, affirming community where LGBTQ+ individuals and allies can come together to enjoy a variety of activities in a safe, supportive space.

This group provides a sense of belonging—offering friendship and chosen family—while also ensuring that LGBTQ+ individuals can fully participate in society without fear of erasure or exclusion. By being visible, engaged, and active in our communities, we show the world that we belong, just like everyone else.

2. What types of events will it offer?

We are launching with a diverse range of activities, including:

Outdoor adventures like hiking, biking, archery, foraging, and fishing

Creative arts such as painting, crafts, jewelry making, woodworking, pottery, and photography

Wellness-focused activities like yoga and mindfulness sessions

Social events such as coffee meetups, movie nights, and game nights

Additionally, we’re open to new ideas and community-driven initiatives. In the future, I’d love to offer makeup and hair clinics to help people explore their personal expression.

3. Who can join?

Out and Active Ohio is open to all LGBTQ+ individuals and allies. We especially want to reach those who are newly coming out or searching for a safe space to be their authentic selves. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where people feel comfortable, supported, and free to be who they are.

4. When will it start?

We are aiming to launch next month as the weather warms up, allowing for more outdoor activities.

5. What are the qualifications for being a group leader, and what do they do?

Group leaders will be LGBTQ+ individuals and allies who have experience in the activity they choose to lead. We have a wealth of talented and passionate people in our community who are eager to share their skills and help create meaningful experiences for others. Their role will be to facilitate events, encourage participation, and ensure that activities remain inclusive and welcoming.

6. Where will this take place?

Right now, we don’t have a dedicated office space, but we will be hosting events at various locations and sharing details through social media and established community groups. As we grow, we hope to secure a permanent space.

7. Where did the inspiration come from, and are you working with anyone to launch it?

I first envisioned this when I was working with BGOPride—I had a long list of ideas I wanted to bring to life. However, my health took a turn, and I had to step back to focus on recovery. Now, I’m undergoing testing for a kidney transplant, and I feel incredibly hopeful that I’ll receive my transplant before summer.

What keeps me going is the knowledge that being out and active in the community is one of the best feelings in the world. I want to help others experience that same sense of freedom, joy, and connection.

8. Is there anything else important that we should know?

Yes! I just ask that people be patient as we build and establish Out and Active Ohio. Every organization takes time to find its footing, but I truly believe in this vision and know we will succeed in creating something meaningful.

9. Looking to the Future: LGBTQ+ Youth Activity Centers

As Out and Active Ohio grows, our long-term mission is to establish LGBTQ+ Youth Activity Centers across the state. These centers will provide a safe, affirming space where LGBTQ+ kids and teens can play sports, learn new skills, and enjoy fun activities—free from bullying and bigotry.

This initiative is about ensuring that young LGBTQ+ individuals have a place to belong, thrive, and build confidence. By fostering a sense of community and inclusion from an early age, we can create a brighter, more accepting future.

With the support of our community, we hope to make this dream a reality as soon as possible and expand to multiple locations throughout Ohio.
