Our Team Needs Your Support to Play This Season
The George Washington University Women’s+ Rugby Club (GWWRFC) needs your help! Due to unexpected budget cuts from the university, we are facing a daunting challenge: we need to raise $3,500 by Wednesday to cover registration fees for our players. Without this crucial funding, we risk forfeiting our first competitive match of the fall season, which is scheduled for Saturday.
Why This Matters
Founded in 1996, GWWRFC has grown into a vibrant and inclusive community for women+ athletes at GWU. Our team has experienced unprecedented growth this year, thanks to the inspiring performance of the USA Women’s Rugby team at the Olympics and the increasing popularity of women’s rugby across the country. We are expecting our roster for the season to host 55 dedicated athletes—a number that reflects both our current players and those planning to join us.
In rugby, having a large, diverse roster is essential for success and safety. With 15 players on the field at a time and a need to manage injuries and practice effectively, a team of our size is normal and necessary. We face real risks if we cannot field sufficient practice squads, particularly in a contact sport where injury prevention is critical.
The Challenge We Face
Our club has always worked diligently to fundraise throughout the year. However, raising $3,500 in just one week—right as the semester begins and new players join—proves to be an insurmountable challenge. Our players are full-time students, many of whom are juggling part-time jobs. Expecting them to cover these costs personally in such a short time is not feasible.
We are reaching out to you, our community, for help. Your generous donations will ensure that our athletes can take the field and continue to experience the empowerment, inclusion, and community that rugby provides. This funding is not just about covering fees; it’s about supporting a growing team that embodies the values of diversity, strength, and unity.
