Just before the afternoon feeding at Dog and Cat Rescue Samui Foundation, we discovered that a large tree had broken several meters above the ground and crashed into one of our dog compounds.

The tree severely damaged one of the large covered shelters where the dogs sleep and escape from the sun and heavy rain. Several dogs were sheltering in the structure when it happened.

We immediately searched underneath and around the fallen tree as thoroughly as we could. Incredibly, we could not find any injured or trapped dogs, and none of the dogs in the area showed signs that they had been struck. We are deeply grateful that they appear to have escaped unharmed.

But the danger is not over.

The dogs must remain in the compound because we currently have no empty area large enough to relocate them. Several of them have now lost part of the covered space they rely on for shelter, and we need to begin clearing and repairing the area as quickly as possible.

Heavy rain and stronger winds likely contributed to the tree breaking. This incident also reminded us how suddenly weather and nature can affect the animals in our care, even when we do everything possible to protect them in their daily lives.

We are therefore asking for help not only to rebuild what was destroyed, but also to reduce the risk of something similar happening again.

The immediate repair may be completed partly by our own team, but specialist tree removal and inspections will require outside help. Because the incident has only just happened, we are still obtaining quotes and determining the full cost. We will share updates, photos and information about the work as it progresses.

Dog and Cat Rescue Samui Foundation provides a home and daily care for more than 400 dogs and 150 cats on Koh Samui. Many of these animals have nowhere else to go. The shelter is the place where they receive food, medical treatment, protection and another chance at life.

Today we were lucky. Next time we may not be.

With your help, we can rebuild the shelter the dogs lost, make the surrounding area safer and invest in further improvements that protect the animals and improve their daily lives.

If we raise more than is required for the immediate cleanup and repairs, every additional donation will be used for further safety and welfare improvements throughout the shelter. This may include stronger fencing, safer gates, visual barriers between compounds, repairs to sleeping areas and other practical projects that reduce stress and improve conditions for the animals.
