Help us keep Mike cared for at home.

Hi, My name is Joy, and I would like to ask for your assistance in helping my brother Mike Harold.
In 1981, Mike was paralyzed in a catastrophic auto accident. His Michigan No-Fault Auto Insurance policy ensured a way to live at home and lead a fulfilling life. His insurance policy included life-long in-home attendant care benefits to meet essential daily tasks such as getting out of bed, dressing, feeding, bathing, and numerous other daily activities that the rest of us take for granted.
So why do we need your help?
Recently, Michigan survivors of catastrophic auto accidents had their insurance benefits cut by 45%. For Mike, this means that if he maintains the same care level that has allowed him to live in his home, he must cover the 45% reduction in medical coverage. My sister Peggy and I are committed to supporting our brother in every way we can. Since July of 2021, we have assisted him with paying over $20,000 to maintain his in-home attendant care and stay living at home. We anticipate those costs will be $30,000-$35,000 in 2022. Although we can meet a significant portion of the estimated costs, Mike's unsustainable financial burden remains. We hope to raise funds to reduce this financial hardship on him.
How did we get here?
In 2019 Michigan underwent auto insurance reform and applied sweeping changes to its no-fault auto insurance laws. In July of 2021, those changes went into effect with a devastating impact on 18,000 Michigan residents who depended on their insurance coverage to survive. Under the new law, insurance benefits were cut by 45%. Although there are 25 Billion dollars in the driver-paid fund held by the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association to pay for the long-term care of auto accident survivors, policyholders injured before 2019 were not grandfathered in under the new law.
Under the new law, Mike's benefits will continue to decrease each year. Many legal cases are being fought in court, but the financial devastation continues for now. There is bi-partisan support to address and fix this oversight in the auto reform bill; however, there is an outright refusal by several key legislators to bring the proposals to a vote and fix this devastating financial and healthcare crisis.
Insurance benefits that were bought and paid for need to be restored. You may find additional information, resources, and ways to help at www.hisnameismikeharold.com
We are all very grateful for any help you may provide.
