On Monday, January 19, community members from across Oregon will gather at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day rally titled, “We Make America Great.” This student-led rally, organized by Si Se Puede Oregon in partnership with Mecha and other community organizations, is calling for justice, dignity, and protection for Oregon’s immigrant and mixed-status communities.
Held in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, this rally brings together families, workers, students, faith leaders, and advocates to stand against hateful and dehumanizing rhetoric directed at immigrants and to demand meaningful, long-term immigration reform. We are uniting around three core demands:
- An end to hateful and dehumanizing speech targeting immigrants
- A permanent and just solution through comprehensive immigration reform
- Stronger action from the State of Oregon to push its limits in protecting immigrant and mixed-status communities
As Dr. King reminded us, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. This rally is about showing up — peacefully and collectively — to defend human dignity and affirm that immigrants are essential members of our communities.
This event is free and open to the public, and we are working to make it accessible, safe, and impactful for everyone who attends. Your support helps ensure that students, families, and community members can raise their voices and be heard.
How Funds Will Be Used (Our Needs)
- All funds raised will go directly toward covering essential costs to organize a safe, accessible, and successful rally, including:
- Sound system and stage equipment so speakers and student voices can be heard
- Event logistics required for a Capitol rally
- Signage, banners, and printed materials to uplift messages of unity, justice, and nonviolence
- Accessibility needs, including interpretation and accommodations
- Safety and coordination costs, such as volunteers, marshals, and supplies
- Transportation and support for student organizers, especially those traveling from across Oregon
