We’re raising funds to place a blue plaque on The Cross Scythes pub in Norton, Sheffield, to recognise it as the historic home of Norton Football Club, founded in 1861.

Why This Matters

Norton FC is one of the earliest football clubs in Sheffield – and in the world. Long before the modern professional game, ordinary people here in Norton were kicking a ball around, helping shape the sport we know and love today.

The Cross Scythes was the club’s meeting place, social hub, and home ground connection. By marking this history with a blue plaque, we want to:

• Celebrate Sheffield’s role as the birthplace of football.

• Keep Norton’s story alive for future generations.

• Give our community pride in its local heritage.
