Born and raised in Yorkshire, Kate Crabtree made a difference across communities from Todmorden to Manchester's Wythenshawe and Moss Side estates, and later in South Devon. Wherever she went, she became a friend and mentor to many.
A classically trained pianist who also played the clarinet, violin, and saxophone, Kate performed with Simply Red, Misty in Roots, and even toured the world with Burning Spear. She later shared her love of music through piano teaching, and though a stroke ended her teaching, it never stopped her from playing. Beyond music, she worked as a clairvoyant and medium, offering spiritual guidance and comfort to anyone who needed it.
Those who knew Kate will remember her as someone who lived loudly, honestly, and on her own terms, someone who could make you laugh while making you think. Her door was always open, whether you needed advice or a dose of honesty. She had that gift of making people feel seen and giving them permission to be exactly who they wanted to be.
Kate raised three amazing children while living with serious health conditions. Despite everything, she kept showing up for people, determined, strong, and present in her community in ways that mattered. She gave more than most people ever could.
Kate's passing was so sudden that there was no time to prepare. The family has costed the funeral arrangements at £4,000, which will cover a crematorium service open to everyone and a celebration event in Exeter.
This support will allow Kate's children to grieve without financial worry and ensure she has the send-off she deserves, one fitting for someone who gave so much to so many.
Any contribution, no matter the size, will go directly toward these costs. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with love and support
