On August 18th, 2025, our family suffered an unimaginable loss when our dad, Rick Freiberg, passed away unexpectedly. He was more than just a father and grandfather—he was a mentor, a friend, and a lifeline for countless people.
Rick dedicated much of his life to the Alcoholics Anonymous community along the Oregon Coast. In Astoria, he became a pillar of strength and guidance, helping hundreds of people find hope and sobriety. Many have shared that they would not be alive—or sober—today without his compassion and support. He never gave up on people. He believed that no matter how far someone had fallen, there was always a way forward. His legacy lives on in every life he helped restore.
At home, our dad was just as extraordinary. He was the kind of dad who could make us laugh when we needed it most, who showed us the meaning of resilience, and who gave unconditional love. Losing him has left a hole in our hearts that can never be filled, but we are comforted knowing how many lives he touched.
We are in the process of planning his memorial service and hope to hold it in Astoria within the next month or two, since that is where most of his friends and AA family live. We want it to be a day where stories can be shared, tears and laughter can flow, and his incredible legacy can be celebrated.
The truth is, our family is struggling to cover the costs. Between travel expenses, venue costs, and simply trying to navigate this unexpected heartbreak, we cannot afford to go further into debt. Jess needs help traveling to Texas so we can gather as a family to share memories, look through photos, and go through our dad’s belongings before the service.
We are humbly asking for help to cover:
Travel expenses so our family can be together during this time.
Venue and service costs in Astoria, where Rick’s community can gather to honor him.
Any contribution, no matter the amount, will help us give him the tribute he deserves. If you’re unable to donate, even sharing this page would mean so much to us.
Our dad gave his whole heart to helping others—he never asked for anything in return. Now, we want to honor him in a way that reflects the love and hope he gave so freely.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for your support, kindness, and generosity during this difficult time.
With love and gratitude,
Allison & Jessica Freiberg and Family
