Help us Honor Mark Meraji: his children, life and legacy

Mark lived more in his 44 years and 362 days than most people live in a lifetime. He was a signed and touring punk musician and, later, an independent artist. He was an on-call tissue donor specialist (certified to extract 98% of everything from an organ donor), a podcaster, and an entrepreneur with his own branded energy drink. He was also a lifelong student — and most recently, Mark was studying to become a nurse. He was in his final semester. After spending so much of the last decade in and out of hospitals for his own illness, he was inspired to provide the best care to people in similar situations. He loved the work.

But what he loved most was being a father to his two brilliant and beautiful children: Mara and Calen. He showed up for his kids, took them to endless soccer games and practices (Mara) and video gaming tournaments up and down Northern California (Calen). It didn’t matter how far he had to drive, or how long he had to wait, he would do anything for those two.

Both Mark and his youngest, Calen were set to graduate this May 2026 — Calen from high school, and Mark from nursing school. Now, Calen will walk across the aisle without his father cheering from the crowd and wrapping him in one of his strong hugs. Mark was the BEST hugger.

He made friends everywhere: in high school, nursing school, at the gym, playing music, at work, and more. Wherever he found himself, he found a friend. Sure, at times he came off as a grumpy contrarian, but Mark cried easily, laughed easily, and felt everything deeply. He is the most tender-hearted person we know. Most people who knew him loved him, and he held his relationships close. One small solace in this tragedy is that when we miss his voice, we can listen to his music.

We love you Mark, always and forever.

Why we’re raising funds:

Although Mark was ill, this was very unexpected. He did not have life insurance. He applied several times, but because of his condition, he was denied. And now the costs facing his family are heavy and immediate.

The funds raised here will go toward:

  • Immediate medical bills from his hospital stay
  • Any unforeseen costs from private students loans
  • Direct support for Mara and Calen’s needs in the weeks and months ahead
  • Celebration of Life to honor Mark
  • And finally, a memorial bench to honor his life—somewhere we can all go, sit, and think about Mark. A place where people who didn’t know him can rest for a moment, read the plaque, and learn something about the man he was. We’re hoping to place the bench at Kathy Lund Park in Rocklin—a park where Mark spent countless hours watching Mara’s soccer practices and games, being her biggest fan.

If you’re able to donate, thank you. If you can’t, sharing this page helps just as much. Rest in peace, Mark Anthony Meraji. (1/25/1981-1/22/2026)

* We will continue to provide updates on this page regarding a Celebration of Mark’s life, which will likely be later this year.
