Help Us Honor Abraham Ewell Jr.'s Memory

Hello Family and Friends,
My name Darrell and my family and I are heartbroken to share the tragic and sudden loss of our beloved brother, Abraham Ewell Jr., who was found deceased on August 13, 2025, just hours after being discharged from Universal Behavioral Health Hospital in Hammond, Louisiana.
Abraham was a kind, funny, and gentle soul who lived with mental health challenges his entire life, including schizophrenia, and also suffered from a neurological condition involving seizures. Despite these lifelong struggles, Abraham brought light and laughter to those around him. He had a unique sense of humor that could lift anyone’s spirits, and he remained hopeful and deeply connected to his family.
For the past three months, Abraham had been in and out of mental behavioral hospitals, seeking help for recurring episodes. On the day of his final discharge, he was released to a group home in Baton Rouge—a city where he had no familiarity, no support system, and no connection to his family. The hospital made this decision without contacting his emergency contacts or next of kin, and arranged transportation through state services to a facility that remains highly suspect. No address was ever provided to our family, and the name of the organization running the group home was never disclosed. Mr. Green, the operator of the home, also failed to provide the correct address to police during their investigation.
Just hours before his death, Abraham left a voicemail saying he had arrived safely, had been fed, was watching TV, and planned to stay put while waiting for someone to take him to the store. This directly contradicts Mr. Green’s later account, in which he claimed Abraham had simply dropped off paperwork and walked off.
Tragically, Abraham was found unresponsive in a vacant lot on Erie Street in Baton Rouge, just five blocks away from the group home. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Universal Behavioral Health Hospital failed Abraham in multiple ways:
By releasing him prematurely despite his mental health condition
By failing to notify his emergency contacts or next of kin
By sending him to a city away from his family, where he was unfamiliar and unsupported
By arranging transportation to a facility without disclosing the location of the facility to his family, leaving us unable to check on his safety or whereabouts
The hospital has a documented history of failed practices, reflected in its Google review rating of just 2.3 stars, with disturbing accounts from other families and patients describing similar neglect.
We are currently seeking legal representation to pursue a wrongful death case and hold those responsible accountable. In the meantime, we are asking for your help to cover funeral and burial expenses so we can lay Abraham to rest with the dignity he deserves.
Because Abraham lived with serious mental health and neurological conditions, he did not qualify for full burial insurance coverage. These conditions significantly limited the type and amount of coverage available to him, leaving our family to bear the full financial burden of funeral arrangements, transportation, and burial costs—expenses that are far beyond what we can manage alone.
Please consider donating and sharing this page. Your support means the world to our family during this incredibly painful time. Every contribution helps us honor Abraham’s life and memory with the respect he deserves.
With gratitude,
