Help us help the Van Wyk family

In February 2021, Claims Technology's Marius Van Wyk (Senior Software Engineer) was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and has since been fighting the battle of his life.

Having worked with Marius for more than six years, it was his colleagues who noticed something wasn't quite right, and insisted he head home and make an appointment with the doctor. In typical Marius fashion, that wasn't going to be until he had finished hosting the team's IPM that day!

To those who know Marius, either through work or socially, he will always epitomise optimism and positive energy. No situation would ever appear bleak to him, no obstacle could ever be insurmountable. What's life without challenges, other than an opportunity to venture out, explore and find new challenges against which to prove oneself.

Of late, Marius has had more than his fair share of challenges, the types of challenge that none of us would choose for ourselves, nor wish on anyone else. Only a few weeks ago, he was admitted back into hospital where he spent 26 days in ICU with life threatening pneumonia. He now faces the added challenge of learning to walk again after suffering muscle atrophy.

Throughout his battle with a cascade of health issues, his optimism has remained unbroken, his first response to any news has always been to cheer up those around him. While his spirit is monumentally strong as ever, his physical strength has failed to keep pace. The consequences of Marius' inability to be his family's rock, dependable in presence and strength, are of course taking a toll on his family.

This page has been set up to support Marius, his wife Bridgette and their two young daughters as they work through this emotionally and financially difficult time. The Claims Tech Social Club will also donating all proceeds from the sale of drinks and snacks during the month of September to support Marius' recovery.
