Hi, my Name is Helena and i am trying to fund-raise money to try and get to the bottom of what is wrong with our Clydesdale Lenny.
i purchased Lenny last year in June 2025 as a yearling.
to be my next ridden horse/showing prospect.
unfortunately Lenny showed signs of what we assumed may have been strangles.
lenny has a snotty nose and an awful cough where food would come down his nose and he would cough clumps of food, hay and grass out of his mouth.
I contacted my vets when I realised this was getting no better and he was struggling to eat.
my vets did tests for strangles which came back negative.
they then suggested a scope as we weren’t sure if he had a cleft palate or a hole somewhere that was causing him to have food come out of his mouth.
the scope was preformed by my vets an nothing serious was seen other then his larynx was abnormally immobile despite efforts to make it move. (Have attached vet report in pictures)
vets stumped at what the issue is and also went into the guttarl pouches to collect fluid to test this to see if any strangles etc.
this came back clear.
Lenny struggles to eat hay, grass and feed at times and has to have a food bucket on his door to work with gravity.
he has a small holed hay net to reduce his eating incase the issue was he was bolting his feed down and that is what was causing choke.
the vets said he is at risk of aspiration pneumonia because of the food coming out of his nose and him coughing it up.
its like he can’t swallow it down properly.
the vets wanted to do a second scope at a discount rate to double check in case they missed anything and to also have another vet take a look at the video they captured.
again nothing could be seen but the larynx did seem more mobile but still not how it should be.
Lenny has been on antibiotics and anti inflammatories in the beginning and there was a slight improvement but not 100%
lenny in vet’s terms is classed as disabled because of this issue.
we have spent a lot of money on Lenny so far and are now struggling especially with the ever rising costs of hay!
lennys nose has improved a little but will still have grass and food contents come out.
his coughing has massively reduced but still occurs when he eats especially when eating scraps of hay or food from the floor.
the vet discussed possibly having a CT scan done of his head to see if this issue is nerve damage etc but this is costly around £1500 :(
Lenny in himself looks well and is his typical colty self at times!
however Wednesday the 4th of February 2026 Lenny had a huge mass lump appear under his jaw and has issues eating as much as he should.
the vets were called straight away! And they are again stumped at what this could be! It’s hot and it’s hard and covering the majority of his bottom jaw.
the vets have checked inside his mouth visibly and couldn’t find anything.
they have put him on inflacam for his pain as he was grinding his teeth and generally being unhappy with you touching the area.
Lenny today is no different the lump is still there and bigger ! The vets shaved the area to take a proper look and it is rather large! But again no idea what this could be but he is in discomfort with it.
the vets have called me today Thursday the 5th of February 2026 and advised they wish to do a scan of this lump to find out what it is and help Lenny and then ideally they would like to try and do a CT scan to see what is going on.
this is all becoming rather costly :(
we love Lenny to absolute pieces and when we feel like we are finally getting somewhere something else pops up.
from this fundraiser we are hoping to just throw everything at him CT scans, scans etc to try and find out why Lenny has been having these issues.
we hope to come to a diagnosis and manage him better or treat/cure him.
lenny is so very loving and at not even 2 years old yet he does not deserve this and we never asked for this when we purchased him but of course we love and adore him and want to do the very best by him!
my hopes and dreams are to show Lenny and if all is ok for him to be my next future riding horse.
I hate that I am having to ask for help and feel like I am begging but I just want Lenny to be ok!
a few months back we seriously considered putting him to sleep because he was constantly choking on his feed and struggling to just do a normal thing which is eat!!
obviously we didn’t go with that option and have just been managing him as best as we can along side vet support and advice.
even if you could spare £1 it would help massively with us trying to get to the bottom of this.
Lenny Is very much loved and adored he has been taken out for walks which he loves just seeing the world and getting out there! But obviously this isn’t able to be done due to the painful swelling under his jaw where his head collar would sit!
any money left over from this fundraiser that we do not use for any reason will be donated to a chosen equine charity !
will provide receipts and evidence on this page for you all to see so you know what and who you are donating to.
Thankyou for taking your time to read this.
