If you know our family, you know that we are not the type to ask for help... creating a GoFundMe makes my skin crawl. However, we are hopeful that our friends and family may be able to help us help this sweet little guy named Chewy.
We came across Chewy being rehomed on Facebook. His previous owner stated that he was in good health, up to date on vaccines and neutered. When we arrived to meet Chewy, we found out that we were strongly mislead.
The previous owner lied about his vaccinations and could not provide records nor an exact date as to his last vaccinations. He also lied about Chewy being neutered. He stated that he was confused and thought we were inquiring about the other dog he was rehoming. We asked many in-depth questions about his history, likes/dislikes, diet, etc., all of which were met with very short, negligent answers. At that point, while we knew we were in for a mess on our hands, Jake and I couldn't justify allowing this dog to stay with the previous owner. We also could not imagine him falling into the revolving door of continuous rehoming or rescues, as most are already overwhelmed.
As we began to drive home, and Chewy sat on my husband's lap with his bottom turned to me, I noticed a mass or abscess of some sort on his anal gland area. When I got home and messaged the previous owner as to what it was or how long it was there, he replied that he "forgot" to tell us about it, that he estimated it was there a month or so, and that he didn't have the time or money to have it looked at by a vet.
While we were prepared to be responsible for the annual exams and vaccinations a pet requires, we were not financially prepared to be this mislead from the start of this interaction. We made an appointment for Chewy to be seen to start the road to better health for this little guy. We were hoping the anal area was an abscess that could be expressed and treated, but unfortunately it turns out that is a tumor.
The vet's office was so kind and helpful, and provided us with an estimate for this cost of care. To ensure his best quality of life, Chewy should have this treated within the next couple months— the sooner the better, as his condition could worsen if left go.
This is uncomfortable to ask for this kind of help. However, this sweet boy does not deserve the cards he was dealt, and we are hopeful that we can rally a way to get him the treatment he deserves.
We have attached the estimate, and will follow up with receipts once Chewy has been treated to ensure transparency.
Thank you for your time and consideration in helping Chewy The Chihuahua!
