Julia is one of my closest and dearest friends, although we only met a short 6 months ago. She is the brightest, most genuine, and beautiful person I have ever encountered. Since she was 15 years old, she has been battling the chronic autoimmune disease that is Ulcerative Coliltis, on top of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, food intolerances, and other medical concerns. For 10 years now, she has severely restricted her diet, has tried meds and procedures that work minimally, and has been frequently in and out of the hospital. While it has been semi-manageable the past 10 years, things have now become extremely severe and dire over the last 6 months. It is not only threatening her life, but keeping her from living it, including finishing her Masters program, and starting her post-graduate life.
About 6 months ago, Julia discovered that her body was once again rejecting pretty much all foods. Changing her diet, only drinking liquids for 30 days, medication, tests, hospital visits, specialists, etc have not helped the situation. Julia has not been able to eat solid food for about five months, and as a result has lost about 12 pounds. She currently sits between 98-100 pounds. As of now the doctors have her on total parenteral nutrition (TPN), which is basically a feeding tube that goes straight into h er bloodstream until she is able to tolerate food. As of now, she is very sick on the TPN and is STILL not able to tolerate anything but liquids. I watched her eat pureed veggie soup and get very sick within a few minutes. Nothing doctors are trying currently is making her better, and sometimes it has even seemed to make her worse.
Doctors have no other plans, no other tests, no alternatives if TPN does not allow her to begin to tolerate food again. They and will not send her out of network to other specialists and hospitals (such as Stanford, Mayo Clinic, etc) because they do not believe it is "serious enough" yet. In my opinion, this is completely ridiculous, so I have started this page to try and raise anything we can to try any and all naturalistic, homeopathic, or medical procedures / alternatives available. Most of this would be out of pocket and not covered by Julia's medical insurance. If you have it in your heart to help her out and donate ANYTHING, it could help save Julia's life.
