Support sustainable farming in Costa Rica

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page. We are Zohar and Lauran (Laurie), and these are our sons Milo and Alex. Over ten years ago we started our farming business Abanagro, planting small fields of butternut squash and papaya in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. We have grown in time and are launching into a new project that emphasizes sustainable agriculture. Read on to see how you can take part in this innovative project and help to implement positive change in the local farming industry.

Costa Rica is known for its biodiversity, conservation efforts and general eco-friendly vibe. Nonetheless, agriculture here has been slow to implement a more respectful approach toward the environment. In recognition of our good practice, Abanagro has won the Bandera Azul Ecológica (CR Ministry of Agriculture ecological award) for two consecutive years. This year we received a major donation from Walmart to build a special structure with retractable roofs that allows us to plant cucumbers all year round, regardless of the difficulties brought on by the rainy season and climate change. The structure itself improves practice by being able to plant in smaller portions of land for longer periods of time, thereby impacting less terrain. The covered area is more controlled; rain and flooding doesn't affect the plants, which reduces our need to fight off mildew and fungus with agrochemicals. We have also implemented other new initiatives, like transitioning to liquid fertilizers that significantly reduce (80%) the residue left in the soil, and decreasing the use of pesticides through alternative pest control (chromatic traps and the introduction of certain insects that get rid of the damaging ones).

These are only the most recent changes. For years now we have incorporated drip-irrigation, which reduces water waste, and have invested in solar panels, thereby making all of our energy consumption, and that of our home, entirely renewable. We work with an ozone water disinfection system, further reducing our chemical footprint, and we produce our own organic microorganisms that both enrich the soil and stimulate growth (for those who have visited us, the base material for this is extracted from the ground beneath the massive and majestic ficus tree next to our house).

Abanagro is more than a business, it is a life project. Integrating innovative practice is not only a means to make our own farm more sustainable, it is also a way to increase awareness and the implementation of these practices. We frequently receive visitors linked to the industry, as well as university student groups, and we happily share what we know and have learned through the years.

Your funds will enable us to keep doing all of this. The 20,000$ that we are seeking to raise will permit us to plant the rest of the available space, update needed equipment, and cover operational costs for three months (primarily labor, seeds, fertilizer). With this amount of working capital we can do the job right and in that time we can stabilize production and make enough of a return to keep the business going forward.

Your contributions can support our family-owned farm to become more sustainable, both environmentally and financially, so we can keep doing what we love to do well into the future. Any donation, no matter the size, will be recognized (if not anonymous) on signage by the grounds entrance and all patrons (250$ or more) are welcome to a personalized tour of the farm and a typical Costa Rican breakfast. A bit more about us: I, Lauran, was born and raised in Costa Rica. While studying art history in New York City, I met Zohar and years later he followed my dream of moving back home. While I love to live and raise our boys on the farm, my days are spent passionately teaching university students and fostering museum work in Costa Rica and abroad. Zohar is the real brains, heart and soul behind the innovative farming that Abanagro puts into practice. Having grown up in a farming community, he cherishes the opportunity to work with nature, to produce quality food and to provide work locally. Although he is a foreigner, he has established an excellent reputation in the Costa Rican agricultural community. He's the reason that Walmart is not just the buyer of all of our production, but also a strategic client in this cucumber project: they have set an extremely fair price, independent of market rates, with the possibility of increasing next year, and will cover some of the transport costs. Many people who know Zohar have faith in his vision and we hope you will too.

Hace más de diez años comenzamos nuestro negocio agrícola Abanagro, sembrando pequeños campos de ayote mantequilla y papaya en Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Hemos crecido con el tiempo y estamos lanzando un nuevo proyecto que enfatiza la agricultura sostenible. Costa Rica es conocida por su biodiversidad, esfuerzos de conservación y su ambiente ecológico en general. No obstante, la agricultura aquí ha sido lenta en implementar un enfoque más respetuoso hacia el medio ambiente. En reconocimiento a nuestras buenas prácticas, Abanagro ha ganado la Bandera Azul Ecológica (premio ecológico del Ministerio de Agricultura de Costa Rica) durante dos años consecutivos. Este año recibimos una donación importante de Walmart para construir una estructura especial con techos retráctiles que nos permite plantar pepinos durante todo el año, independientemente de las dificultades causadas por la temporada de lluvias y el cambio climático. La estructura en sí mejora la práctica al permitir plantar en segmentos más pequeños de tierra por períodos más largos, impactando así menos terreno. El área cubierta es más controlada; la lluvia y las inundaciones no afectan a las plantas, lo cual reduce nuestra necesidad de combatir el mildew/moho y los hongos con agroquímicos. También hemos implementado otras nuevas iniciativas, como la transición a fertilizantes líquidos que reducen significativamente (80%) los residuos en el suelo y la disminución del uso de pesticidas mediante el control de plagas alternativo (trampas cromáticas y la introducción de ciertos insectos que eliminan aquellos dañinos).

Estos son solo los cambios más recientes. Desde hace años hemos incorporado el riego por goteo, que reduce el desperdicio de agua, y hemos invertido en paneles solares, haciendo que todo nuestro consumo de energía, y el de nuestro hogar, sea completamente renovable. Trabajamos con un sistema de desinfección de agua por ozono, reduciendo aún más nuestra huella química, y producimos nuestros propios microorganismos orgánicos que enriquecen el suelo y estimulan el crecimiento (para aquellos que nos han visitado, el material base para esto se extrae del suelo bajo el enorme y majestuoso árbol de matapalo junto a nuestra casa).

Abanagro es más que un negocio, es un proyecto de vida. Integrar prácticas innovadoras no solo es una forma de hacer nuestra propia finca más sostenible, sino también una manera de aumentar la conciencia y la implementación de estas prácticas. Frecuentemente recibimos visitas de personas vinculadas a la industria, así como grupos de estudiantes universitarios, y compartimos felizmente lo que sabemos y hemos aprendido a lo largo de los años.

Apoyarnos con sus fondos nos permitirá seguir haciendo todo esto. Los 20 mil dólares que buscamos recaudar nos permitirán plantar el resto del espacio disponible bajo la estructura nueva, actualizar el equipo necesario y cubrir los costos operativos durante tres meses (principalmente mano de obra, semillas, fertilizantes). Con esta cantidad de capital de trabajo podemos hacer el trabajo correctamente y en ese tiempo podemos estabilizar la producción y obtener suficientes ingresos para mantener el negocio hacia adelante.

Sus contribuciones apoyarán nuestra finca familiar para que sea más sostenible, tanto ambiental como financieramente, para que podamos seguir haciendo lo que amamos bien en el futuro. Un poco más sobre nosotros: Yo, Lauran, nací y crecí en Costa Rica. Mientras estudiaba historia del arte en la ciudad de Nueva York, conocí a Zohar y años después él siguió mi sueño de regresar a casa. Aunque me encanta vivir y criar a nuestros hijos en la finca, paso mis días enseñando apasionadamente a estudiantes universitarios y fomentando el trabajo en museos, tanto en Costa Rica como internacionalmente. Zohar es el verdadero cerebro, corazón y alma detrás de la agricultura innovadora que Abanagro pone en práctica. Habiendo crecido en una comunidad agrícola, aprecia la oportunidad de trabajar con la naturaleza, producir alimentos de calidad y proporcionar trabajo localmente. Aunque es extranjero, ha establecido una excelente reputación en la comunidad agrícola costarricense. Él es la razón por la cual Walmart no solo es el comprador de toda nuestra producción y donador de la estructura, sino también un cliente estratégico en este proyecto de pepinos: han establecido un precio extremadamente justo, independiente de las tarifas del mercado, con la posibilidad de aumentarlo el próximo año, y cubrirán algunos de los costos de transporte.
