A Dignified Homegoing for Our Mother, Maryland Wiggins

Hello everyone,

I'm Harold Defreeze, known to many of you as "Mayor Meez." I’m reaching out today with a heart that is completely broken. My siblings and I are grieving the sudden and tragic loss of our beautiful mother.

My mom was a kind, sweet-spirited woman of faith. She was known for her beautiful smile and a contagious laugh that could light up any room. She was a giver, a soldier for her community, and a mother who loved her children fiercely.

We are trying to give her the dignified homegoing service she deserves, but we are facing an agonizing, uphill battle.

Our first barrier was logistical. Our mother passed away unexpectedly in California, far from her family here in Oklahoma and Texas. This created immediate hurdles, and we have spent the last several weeks fighting just to navigate the system and get her released from the coroner's office.

But that is not the real reason for this fundraiser.

As we've tried to handle her affairs, we've been met with a devastating and painful reality. We’ve discovered that our mother, a woman who gave her life, loyalty, and resources to her faith, put her trust in the wrong people.

We are now in the infuriating position of being locked out of her entire life.

Her bank accounts, her life insurance policies, her storage, and all her personal assets are not in her name or in the names of her children. They are tied to third parties, "men of God" and institutions that she trusted, who have gone completely silent and are not communicating with us.

While we are still waiting on a final toxicology report and praying this was not the result of foul play, we are being blocked from accessing the very funds our mother set aside for this exact moment.

We are fighting a war on two fronts: trying to grieve our mother while fighting a spiritual and financial battle just to give her a proper burial.

We cannot, and will not, let this injustice be the final word on her legacy.

We, her children, are standing in the gap. We are taking on the full financial burden ourselves to bypass the very people who have forsaken her. We are out of time, and we must act now.
