Hi everyone,
We’re Katie and Andrew, and we wanted to share a little about our boy, Dexter.
He’s a 6yr old cockapoo who we rescued at the beginning of this year after years of neglect and domestic violence.
From the moment we brought him home, we promised him safety, love, and the best second chance at a happy life.
Dexter has faced challenge after challenge with his health (which we were not made aware of when we rescued him). Despite regular vet visits, dentals & procedures, his condition worsened and Dexter needed to be referred to a Vet Dentist Specialist.
On Tuesday 30th September we visited the specialist vet dentist and Dex underwent quite a major procedure. He had 14 teeth extracted, 6 infected roots removed and a large part of his gums removed due to infection.
This procedure alone cost just shy of £4,000, which has caused a huge financial strain on us.
Dexter has Gingivitis, CCUS and Stage 3/4 Periodontal disease.
Since this is an ongoing condition, Dexter will needed specialist check ups regularly and will need ongoing treatment so we can hopefully manage his disease long term.
We don’t know the exact long term plan and cost impact yet. We will know more about the long term plan when we go back 19th November when he has to have another procedure and further extractions (roughly another £2-£3k vet bill).
The Vet did discuss other options, such as Euthanasia due to the long term and ongoing condition.. but for us.. we just don’t even feel like that’s an option. Dex is ok day to day and we just couldn’t bring ourselves to making that decision when he still has so much life to live and deserves a second chance.
Since rescuing him, we’ve already spent thousands on vet bills and treatment, to give him the best possible care. Unfortunately, dental treatment is not covered on the insurance and we’re unable to find any other provider who will accept pre-existing dental conditions— meaning we can’t claim anything back.
Asking for help is never easy, we’ve had to swallow a lot of pride to do this, but Dexter means the absolute world to us and we just can’t give up on him. He’s already had such a tough first 6 years of his life with neglect and domestic violence.. he really does just deserves the best and we want to do our utmost to give him that!
If you’re able to contribute, no matter how small, it would mean everything to us and to Dexter.
The funds will be used to pay for Dexters treatment in November.
Thank you so much for reading and for supporting us and our gorgeous boy.
Love,
Katie, Andrew & Dexter
