This GoFundMe campaign has been created by members of the Tempe Police Department to assist one of our own, Sergeant Michael Powell, and his family. Sergeant Powell has served our community with dedication and integrity, and now, we’re coming together to support him in return.

His young son Brayden is in need of a BraunAbility Turny Evo car seat — a life-changing adaptive seat that will make daily transportation safer, easier, and more accessible for their family. These devices are incredibly helpful but come at a significant cost that is not fully covered by insurance.

Brayden is a determined, hilarious, and incredibly brave 12-year-old who was blindsided by a spinal stroke that changed his life in an instant. Once an adventurous boy who loved climbing mountains and chasing waterfalls, Brayden now faces each day from a wheelchair, navigating endless therapies, medical appointments, and challenges no child should have to endure.

Despite everything, his spirit shines through. He still laughs, still dreams, and still finds joy, even when his body makes every movement a battle.

But Brayden’s journey hasn’t stopped at paralysis. Alongside his spinal stroke, he faces systemic lupus, avascular necrosis of the hips, and pediatric osteoporosis; a devastating trio that limits his mobility and puts him at constant risk of fractures and dislocations. Right now, Brayden cannot safely transfer from his wheelchair to a vehicle without being physically lifted.

For most families, that would be a heavy lift, but Brayden’s mom is also fighting her own health battles. She too has systemic lupus and degenerative disc disease, with multiple damaged discs and a recent neck surgery that has left her unable to lift her son at all.

This family has faced every obstacle with courage, humor, and love. But they need help to take the next step toward independence and safety.

Their goal is simple but life-changing: to give Brayden the freedom to transfer himself in and out of the vehicle safely, without risking his fragile bones or relying on someone to carry him. This means more than convenience. It means dignity, confidence, and a taste of the independence he deserves.
