Help us get to Western Edge FLL Invitational

We are "The Positive Protons" a group of 5th & 6th-grade students at Leighton Elementary and Harmon Middle School in Aurora, OH. We have been participating in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) Challenger robotics competition for the last 3 years. This friendly competition introduces science, technology, engineering, and math to children ages 9 – 16 engaging them in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering a LEGO robot navigating missions of a robot game.

As part of the competition, teams participate in a research project to identify and solve a real-world problem. This year, teams were challenged to explore where energy comes from, and how it is distributed, stored and used. They were challenged to come up with an innovative solution to the energy problem identified by the team.

This year in Ohio over 350 teams with 4000+ students competed at various regional and district levels before the top 40 teams competed for the opportunity to represent Ohio at Global Competitions.

This year the “Positive Protons” were honored to win the Innovative Project Award at the state competition in Dayton and were selected to represent Ohio at the Western Edge Invitation Competition in Long Beach, CA May 12-14th, 2023.

We estimate the cost of sending the team members and 2 coaches at $12,000. This cost is spread between, travel, lodging, food etc. Ohio Education outreach is covering our registration fee of $1,500. The team is putting together a GoFundMe page and is organizing restaurant fundraisers. We are also presenting to local companies and community organizations to help defray expenses. The rest of the cost will be absorbed by the parents.
