Help us get the Sources Chrétiennes
A group of students from Polis - The Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities is in need of the Sources Chrétiennes, a bilingual collection of patristic texts, published by the Institut des Sources Chrétiennes in 1943. It is made up of more than 600 works by Greek, Latin and Syriac Fathers of the Church, which is being updated. At Polis we are missing more than 300 volumes.
The Fathers of the Church were the first witnesses of the apostles: they received Sacred Scripture and made the first exegesis, and therefore the first inculturation of the Faith. They are a guide to transmit the Faith in the current circumstances that each of them lived. At the same time, all their thought and all their prayers, were reflected in these texts.
To advance academically - to know the texts first hand and to be able to work on them - in this field, it is essential to go to the Sources, and the most important source today is the Sources Chrétiennes collection: it has an introduction, original text, critical apparatus, French translation and notes. It is the world reference collection in the study of Patristics and ancient texts. This collection will help tremendously to our studies in ancient latin and greek as well as enrich the Polis library collection.
Polis , founded in 2011 in Jerusalem, is a gathering point for Christians, Jewish and Muslims to study the ancient languages and civilizations of our world: ancient greek, hebrew, syriac, coptic, latin and arabic.
Our conviction is that learning from the past helps build mutual understanding and respect of different cultures and peoples in the Middle East and in Western Civilization. A dialogue rooted in the respect of every identity generates mutual understanding and long term peace.
We would really appreciate that you considered joining this initiative and help us get this wonderful collection so our understanding of the ancient can help us in the present .
